A hot tub is a luxurious amenity that can create a space for you and your family to relax, unwind, and host guests from the comfort of your backyard or other outdoor space; however, safely installing hob tub electrical wiring can be challenging. Combining water with electricity can be dangerous, making it crucial that your hot tub is wired correctly in order to keep you, your family, and your home safe from harm. Today, we will be sharing a few crucial do’s and don’ts of hot tub electrical wiring so you can safely and comfortably enjoy your luxurious hot tub all year long!

DO:

  • Consult a professional electrician. Improper wiring can cause damage to your hot tub and your home and can put the safety of your family at risk. When taking on such an important project, it is important to hire a trained professional.
  • Take time to understand your tub’s unique electrical wiring. The more you understand before beginning this project, the safer your hot tub will be.
  • Place your hot tub in a safe location, far away from other lighting mechanisms or power lines.
  • Use the appropriate materials: flexible conduit, liquid-tight flexible metal conduit, or liquid-tight flexible nonmetallic conduit less than six feet in length, cord and plug connections, and cord and plug connections with GFCI-protected cords no more than 15 feet in length.
  • Make sure that your tub’s shut-off option is accessible and visible to all users.

DON’T:

  • Attempt to complete an electrical wiring project by yourself. Wiring a hot tub can be a dangerous task. It is crucial to get help from a professional electrician to avoid damaging your hot tub and your home and to keep yourself and your family safe from harm.
  • Install low-voltage lighting within 10 feet of the hot tub
  • Install your hot tub under existing power lines

Understanding these simple do’s and don’ts is a great place to start when beginning the process of wiring your hot tub’s electrical system; however, it is best to contact a licensed electrician to walk you through the process and handle this potentially dangerous task.
